Internet Marketing ideas: Flipping Websites For Fun or Profit

April 30th, 2007 · 1 Comment

One way to earn money is by what’s called “flipping” websites.

Actually, the way most people do it, it’s a misnomer, but that’s OK. A true flip would be to buy a site cheap, improve it, and sell it for a profit, much like real estate entrepreneurs do when they flip houses.

Most Internet Marketers actually build the site, add some bare bones content to it, then sell the site to someone. Doing this can earn them maybe a $75 to $100, and considering the fact that it costs very little to register a domain, and if the person is a proficient writer only a few hours of time to write the content, it can pay some bills.

Some IM’ers claim they can do one a day, but that’s a lot of work. Someone just starting out can maybe figure on doing one a week.

A better way to flip websites would be to take it a step further. Build the site (or purchase one cheaply, we’ll show where in a minute). Improve it. Get backlinks to it either by submitting to directories, or by blogging and pinging, submitting articles to article directories for one way links back, etc. In other words the traditional SEO things.

Then if done right, after 3 or 4 months, the site should have gained some Google Pagerank, and hopefully will be earning some income.

In either of the above cases, at this point the site is immensely more valuable.

If the site is only earning a steady $50 or $100 a month (through AdSense income or from affiliate referrals), you should be able to sell it for 6 times monthly earnings, so in this case $300 to $600. Maybe more in a competitive niche if you have good rankings for good keywords.

Flipping a website for $600 vs. flipping one for $75 requires not much additional work, other than the directory submissions or the article submissions (you can use some of the same articles you put on the site already), maybe you can put up a Squidoo lens or two to get valuable links back, or maybe a couple short blog posts a week will be enough to do the trick.

Or take it a step further. With a little more patience, if you can build the income to $500 a month, then you do the math.

Flipping websites can be a tremendous income producer. If you don’t have pressing financial needs where you sacrifice your creation the same day for $75, I would suggest hanging on for the medium term. Get yourself an inventory of 50 or 100 sites. At the end of a year, you could be doing very well. Maybe well enough that you don’t want to get rid of some of them, after all, why sacrifice a site making you $500 a month for a mere $3000?

To buy, or to sell, websites, here’s where many of the pros do it:

You can use eBay also, if you’re buying you might get a much better deal.
