I’ll have to assume, if you’re reading my blog on a regular basis, that you’re an Internet marketer, or aspire to be one.
If so, I congratulate you, it’s a great career field to be in.
I’ve had this discussion with others in the past, normally it’s with people who understand what Internet marketing is all about, but today was different. I ran into my neighbor this morning as I was parking at the office. He runs an air conditioning service, is in his late 50’s, and has been getting his hands dirty and breaking his back since he was young. He seems to do well financially.
I told him I was moving, and though we chat quite a bit, all he knows is that I sell stuff on the Internet, and we have a warehouse and ship stuff out every day. I told him I was moving myself to a smaller office but keeping the warehouse, and he asked me how business was, and I said great, but that to be honest the part of the business he sees is only a very small part of what I do.
In fact, I told him, I really should be shutting down that part of the business because it barely breaks even after rent and payroll, and the only reason I keep it is because I don’t want to let my employee go. So, I keep doing that.
This had my neighbor intrigued. So what do you really do, he asked, and I dug down and tried to come up with an answer he might understand. I sell information, I told him, and I could see he didn’t understand.
I went on to say I provide instant access to information that Internet users are looking for, for which I charge, and I send traffic to big companies for which I get paid a commission for sales they make to my traffic. He was starting to get the idea. You mean, people pay you to send them business? Yep, they pay me a lot, in fact.
And I further explained that I also run membership sites for which people pay me monthly in order to learn to do what I do. Really, he asked? Sure, they pay me well, and lots of people. I explained that it was nice, I don’t have to do any heavy lifting like he does, but my eyes are tired at the end of the day.
Somehow I don’t think he sympathized with that. 
I could tell he was interested, but he had to run, he had a job site to be at, his back was killing him, but that’s what he does. He gets paid by the hour, and at the end of the day, he’s no longer getting paid and he puts the Ben Gay on his back.
On the other hand, I’ll go home, take a little nap after dinner to rest my tired eyes, but I’m continuing to get paid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. What a great career Internet marketing is, once you figure it out.
